Cybersecurity in Retail: Risks, Best Practices & Frameworks

Ransomware is malware criminals use to encrypt company data and demand ransom payment as a condition for decryption. For example, card data is processed inside Shopify’s PCI DSS Level 1–certified environment and tokenized, so payment information never https://www.mlb4s.com/manifold-benefits-of-building-mobile-apps-for-retail-business.html lives on your store’s systems for malware to harvest. Malware families like FAKEUPDATES, which trick users into downloading malicious files disguised as browser updates, increased during 2024.

In this section, we will discuss some of the key regulations that apply to the retail industry and why compliance is important. Compliance with these regulations is crucial for retail stores to maintain their customers’ trust and avoid potential legal and financial consequences. The retail industry is subject to a variety of regulations that govern the collection, use, and protection of personal information. Many retailers are now increasing their digital footprint, adopting more cloud-based services, deploying more complex IT stacks and managing large, geographically distributed networks.

CyberProof addresses the cybersecurity challenges in the Retail industry through its comprehensive managed services, advanced tools, and methodologies. The Retail industry faces unique cybersecurity challenges due to its reliance on interconnected systems, like POS terminals and supply chains, which are often targeted for payment data theft. Trap hazardous or unwanted data traffic within the network, thus containing cyberattacks.

Retail cybersecurity describes the practices businesses employ to protect information like customer data and digital tools like store devices from fraud and cyberattacks. Additionally, https://integratingpulse.com/articles/yhl-cosmetics-usa-examination/ the need to protect vast amounts of customer data while ensuring seamless operations makes retailers prime targets for sophisticated cyberattacks. Security solutions such as Web Application Firewall (WAF) and SASE (multi-factor authentication and firewall security) block malicious traffic targeting the website or mobile apps.

The 2026 “Cost of Insider Risks Global Report” found the average annual cost of insider security incidents reached $19.5 million, up from $17.4 million in 2025. Traditional security tools like firewalls are generally ineffective against these threats. These threats can be either malicious (intentional harm for personal gain), or negligent, like unintentional harm due to carelessness or lack of awareness. Web application attacks exploit security gaps in ecommerce websites, content management systems, and customer portals. ISC2’s 2025 “Cybersecurity Workforce Study” found teams now prioritize critical skills gaps over the number of available workers. The challenge to companies hiring cybersecurity talent is shifting from headcount to skills.

• Retail security frameworks provide retailers with a clear structure for building defenses, maintaining data compliance, and managing risks across complex digital systems.
• By prioritizing cybersecurity, retailers can safeguard their operations, maintain customer trust, and comply with legal and industry data protection requirements.
• APT groups will even frequently distribute malware via email to move laterally across networks.
• As stores, online platforms, and cloud systems become interconnected, a Zero-Trust approach is becoming important to limit attackers’ lateral movement.
• Retail websites, mobile apps, and e-commerce platforms handle sensitive transactions, customer interactions, and personal data.

Shopify POS has features for retailers to prevent unauthorized access and support compliance when processing in-person sales. South Korean ecommerce company Coupang disclosed a data breach in 2025 affecting 33.7 million customer accounts. Marks & Spencer said some personal customer data was taken, including contact details, dates of birth, and online order history. An Internet of Things (IoT) device cyberattack happens when attackers exploit security gaps in https://medicalcases.eu/top-6-digital-transformation-trends-in-healthcare-for-2019-forbes/ connected retail devices. For example, a disgruntled employee may access customer credit card information and sell it on the dark web, or a negligent colleague may connect to company systems through unsecured public Wi-Fi networks.

Insider threats

• IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report found the global average breach cost was $4.44 million.
• These attacks can lead to unauthorised access to company systems, financial losses, and compromised customer data.
• Managed Detection and Response (MDR) or automated Extended Detection and Response (XDR) solutions provide around-the-clock visibility, which is especially valuable for retailers with limited IT staff.
• Cybersecurity for retail is important because retailers handle large amounts of sensitive customer information, including payment data and personal details, making them prime targets for cyberattacks.

Cybercriminals see this data as a valuable target, and a data breach can have serious consequences for both the retailer and the customers. Retailers have access to a vast amount of customer data, including personal information, credit card details, and purchasing history. The retail industry is also increasingly relying on IoT devices to improve the customer experience and offer new features to shoppers. The 2022 Holiday Bad Bot Research found a 50% increase in bad bot traffic during the holiday shopping season. One of the major challenges for the retail industry is the rise of automated threats. In this section we’re taking a look at the top cybersecurity challenges in the retail industry and how companies can address them.
